Technical Support Engineer (6 Opennings)
About the Job
Technical Support Engineering position with a rapidly growing Grape Solar, Inc. in Eugene, Oregon. Performs various electrical, mechanical and structural engineering tasks related to the design, manufacture, and deployment of Solar systems and electrical and mechanical assemblies associated with solar panels, inverters, and racking system.
- Working directly with manufacturing partners to develop and analyze and determine structural integrity, system loads and fatigue life.
- Working with Grape Solar internal groups to quote complete projects from beginning to the end.
- Prepares documentation/report of analysis and margins of safety.
- Investigates and resolves mechanical failures and recommends design changes as necessary using field reports, test data, and analysis.
- Develops fabrication and repair procedures including testing requirements to ensure structural members or components meet specifications.
- Researches and analyzes customer design proposals, specifications, and other data to evaluate feasibility, and cost.
- Works with a team of engineers and designers to select hardware components, develop Solid Works models, develop detailed design drawings, and provide fabrication support to shop personnel.
- Specify, perform and document wind tunnel testing and analysis.
- Perform detailed check of other designer’s drawings for completeness and accuracy.
- Collaborates work with vendors and personnel from other design centers on projects.
- Develops weatherproof electronic packaging concepts and designs.
- Attends meetings as requested, develops and delivers presentations to management as needed.
- Supports the production/manufacturing of structure(s).
- Understanding of Material science related to structural components and finishes to meet external environment applications.
Technical Skills / Knowledge:
- Minimum 5 years relevant working experience.
- Experience working with structural engineering theory, practices and procedures (Code ASCE 7-05)
- Working knowledge of Finite Element (FE) Analysis of mechanical structures.
- Experience in techniques for mounting structures to various pole materials, sizes, and shapes.
- Experience working with machining operations, joint design, and corrosion/galvanic compatibility
- Wind stress calculations
- Design for Manufacturability Analysis
- CAD Experience using Solid Works 2007 to 2009
- NEMA std packaging experience specifically NEMA 4 and NEMA 6
- Hands on experience in working with shop tools to build prototypes.
- PDM Product Data Management for design documentation control.
Preferred but not required experience
- Solar panel mounting systems
- Professional Engineer (PE) license/certification preferred
- Experience in tooling design specifically for extrusions
- Thermal analysis and thermal analysis software
- Safety Agency Approval ( UL CSA CE etc.) design experience
- Design, analysis or project experience for the Electric Utility industry and related codes, such as NESC
- Chinese language helpful, but not required
- Independence/ Accountability:
- Must have professional manner and respect the confidentiality of administrative matters and files
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

- Excellent organizational skills are required to prioritize responsibilities, thus completing work in a timely fashion

- Must be proactive to ensure proper follow up and completion of projects

Communication Skills:
Must have excellent communication and presentation skills to effectively interface with colleagues and customers.
Education and Work Experience:
B.S. in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, or related field of study with 5 years working experience.
